The region is recovering from a widespread sickness, but a young, mute, Caucasian girl, the daughter of a recently freed Black slave named Sarah, carries a terrifying and inexplicable affliction: everything she touches mysteriously dies instantly. Because of this, she must wear mittens at all times, and the townsfolk fear she is cursed or a carrier of the plague.
