The main plot revolves around the events of October 1942, when a Japanese cargo ship, the Lisbon Maru, carrying over a thousand British Prisoners of War (POWs) from Hong Kong, was torpedoed by a US submarine off the coast of Zhoushan, near Dongji Island, China.
