A community of survivors living on a small, heavily defended island, connected to the mainland by a causeway that floods with the tide. The story focuses on a family: Jamie, his ailing wife Isla, and their 12 year old son, Spike. When Jamie takes Spike on a coming of age hunting ritual to the mainland, they encounter new, mutated forms of the infected, including “Slow lows” (large, mould-covered creatures that crawl) and an intelligent, larger “Alpha” infected.
