Wei, a brilliant but shy Chinese student, travels to New Zealand on a scholarship. She suffers from a facial deformity inherited from her scientist father, who died experimenting with skin grafts to “cure” his own appearance. Wei longs to fit in and be accepted, especially by her popular cousin Angela and her friends.
