The film stars Ian McKellen as Jimmy Erskine, a powerful and ruthless theatre critic in 1930s London. Erskine uses his influence to manipulate and destroy the careers of young actors and directors. When a new, ambitious owner takes over the Daily Chronicle, Erskine finds himself in a battle for power.
